The mentally retarded child is an unwanted baby - both to the society and its parents. The society doesn't care. Parents can't recover from the shock and consider it a burden. Consequently, they withdraw from the society and make no investment on the child.

Gnana Deepam was started for 4 children in 1993, the school runs at present with 32 special children belonging to low income families. The school has 9 full time teachers who are paid a small salary due to lack of adequate financial resources.
